Charleston Air Force Base

The U.S. Air Force won the EPA's Energy Efficiency/Energy Program Management Award for executing a project to replace the existing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system with a combination of geothermal heat pumps and high-efficiency air conditioning equipment. The base now saves more than 186 billion Btu, 31.7 million gallons of water, and $2.3 million a year.

Calpine Columbia Energy Center

The Calpine Columbia Energy Center was awarded the Energy Star Combined Heat and Power for its combustion turbine-based CHP system that produces up to 500 MW of electricity and one million pounds of steam per hour. By installing a CHP system, a facility can increase operational efficiency and decrease energy costs, while reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Medical University of South Carolina

The Medical University of South Carolina is one of the first winners of the Environmental Justice Achievement Awards. The awards recognize organizations for their distinguished accomplishments in addressing environmental justice issues. MUSC’s Public Information and Community Outreach initiative was recognized for applying environmental justice principles to promote and enhance community health.
