GOOD AND PLENTY: Early August is a great time to find delicious, local food. (Photo: Wonderlane/Flickr)
The USDA declared the week of August 1-7, 2010, as National Farmers Market Week.
So that's as good an excuse as any to visit your closest farmers' market. One of the all-time best, of course, is the Williamsburg Farmers Market on Duke of Gloucester Street. It's been around for years and the vendors do a fantastic job every Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and then again on Tuesdays during the summer, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
They even provide a nifty — and humongous — list of recipes from local restaurants and vendors on their website.
Virginia Grown is sponsoring a photo contest that runs through August 18. Submit your favorite photo taken at the Williamsburg Farmers Market to win one of the prizes worth $100. The categories are by age group, so everyone has a chance. See photo contest for rules.
