As mobile and Internet technology expands, the ability for more people to easily telework also expands. This is the case with private businesses as well as with government agencies. A new report from the Telework Exchange reveals that 65 percent of federal agencies have above-average information technology (IT) infrastructures that are capable of supporting teleworkers.
Other key findings in the report include:
Mobile device use by federal employees is expected to grow by 20 percent over the next year
21 percent of federal employees currently telework
Future telework growth could lead to 59 percent of employees regularly teleworking in the next two years
64 percent of federal agencies do not reimburse employees for Internet service
The increase in teleworking as well as an increase in the use of mobile devices is driving federal agencies to focus on improving the telecommuting experience.
William Hartwell, general manager and senior director of the Federal Markets Division at Riverbed commented on the need for reliable data access, “As agencies look to mobilize the workforce and support telework programs for increased productivity, it is important to provide an IT infrastructure that meets the demand for delivering mission-critical applications anytime and anywhere, especially as employees will be located farther away from the data, and yet will expect the same, if not better experience while teleworking.”
