The 2010 International Builders’ Show began today and news of green and sustainable building products are already being reported. Georgia-Pacific Wood Products launched a new sustainability campaign, “Just the Facts”, which focuses on the company’s sustainable products and practices.

As part of the Just the Facts campaign, Georgia-Pacific Wood Products has launched a new website, builditbetter.com. The builditbetter.com website has dozens of facts including:
  • Manufacturing a concrete slab floor consumes 2.5 times more fossil fuel than a wood joist floor.
  • There’s virtually no waste when we use a tree. Bark and wood residuals are utilized as the primary source of energy at our production facilities, supplying more than 50% of the energy needed to make our wood products.
  • The use of plywood can help earn credits under the USGBC LEED standard.
“Georgia-Pacific Wood Products has always been dedicated to supplying our customers with quality building materials,” says Caryn King, director of marketing, Georgia-Pacific Wood Products. “One of the objectives of our new campaign and web site is to effectively and efficiently communicate relevant information to builders and dealers and provide resources that may be helpful to them in today’s highly competitive marketplace,” added King. The company also received notification that they have received chain-of-custody certification from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). This certification ensures that the wood used in Georgia-Pacific’s engineered lumber facilities is sourced from SFI-certified forests.

The green building news doesn’t stop there; Georgia-Pacific Wood Products has also received Green Approved certification from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) for 13 of its products. The Green Approved designation helps homebuilders achieve points towards NAHB Green Certification.

As the 2010 International Builders’ Show continues, I’m sure we’ll continue to hear more about how green building is making its mark on the industry.
