New York City’s mass of commercial and high-rise residential buildings provide the city’s managers with an opportunity to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the city. By focusing on energy-efficient upgrades, residents and property managers can save money and the city can reduce its building-generated carbon footprint. A new green building program has been launched to train 1,000 building superintendents in the city on energy efficient practices in the next year.

 

The program, One Year, One Thousand Green Supers was announced in a Sept. 25 ceremony attended by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Jim Berg (Realty Advisory), and Mike Fishman (32BJ).

 

“One Year, One Thousand Green Supers, which is approved by the U.S. Green Building Council and the Building Performance Institute, is part of the Thomas Shortman Training Fund. The program is a 40-hour class that provides building service workers with the latest, state-of-the-art practices in energy-efficient operations. The curriculum trains workers to identify and address wasted energy, create a green operating plan and perform cost-benefit analysis for building owners and managers.” Source: 32BJ

 

The official program launched after a successful pilot in which mangers from 40 buildings successfully completed the program. Although it is nearly October, an additional 300 supers are expected to finish the program by year-end.
