Obama to Republicans: Stop blocking UE vote

During this week's address, President Obama encouraged Republican Senators to stop blocking the vote on the unemployment benefit extension.

During his July 17, 2010 weekly address, President Obama actively encouraged Republican Senators to stop blocking the vote on the unemployment benefit extension that more than a million Americans are waiting for. As unemployment continues to hover near record highs, benefits are running out and families are left wondering how they will be able to put food on the table.

While programs funded by the Recovery Act are working to get Americans back to work, including those looking for work in the clean energy industry, more needs to be done to bridge the gap between the old job and the new job. According to the Senate calendar, a roll call vote on H.R.4213 will be held tomorrow at 2:30 pm. If passed, this will extend unemployment benefits through November, giving those that are out of work a few more months to find a job without having to worry about how they will feed their families.

I'm missing this concept. My standard benefits (26 weeks) are scheduled to expire next week ... Does this mean that I will get an extension on my benefits? I live in NY. I never thought that I'd be going through this turmoil ... Someone please help me understand what I should do next?

With this bill now passed you will go into tier #2 automatically! Just keep filing your claim each week and you will go into the next tier and you will remain getting the same amount of unemployment minus the extra $25.00 that they took out to help the bill get passed. so you will be good until November 2010. And if they add an extra tier #5 then it will b beyond Nov.2010?? Good luck!! I am in the same boat but worse! I havent recieved a check since June 6th!!!

I have written to both Senators in Texas and one responded and blamed the lack of funds on the wars and the bank bail out. No reply from the other. I have been a long term republican but have decided to vote against them when their term is up.

Obama and the Democrats are to blame for this whole mess not getting any better. For all those who curse the Republicans, go ahead keep voting for Democrats and live off your piddely unemployment for the rest of your lives. We need sensible government and the Dems are not cutting it. I won't even benefit from the bill because I already had my 99 weeks. And you know, I don't even WANT anymore of their blood money. But I'm glad everyone is happy with Obama and Dems taking us down the.... More

I'm not sure what news you follow but not a single Republican has voted YES for this bill. The only ones cited to potentially have the ability to step outside "the herd" and behave as independent thinkers are Maine's two Senators... maybe they will in favor of it. It depends on how much pressure the party puts on them. Republicans have cited concern for the future of the federal deficit, however, this concern is relatively new and doesn't stretch across the board for all things that.... More

Stop disrespecting our President Obama before the world, with acts of insubordination this is another way of us acting as divided we fall, we have been great at being divided for hundreds of years, let true leadership occur, be open minded, not narrow minded, and most of all oppressive and ungrateful, we broke things together, lets fix things together, we might just make it after all, look around, isn't enough stuff around the world breaking up, it time for the person in the mirror to take a.... Is there not a question you raise? "Acts of Insubordination"...President Obama is our subordinate. If you read your history, the documents which defined this country including the declaration of independence, the Constitution and it's amendments and others, you would know this. If we were a more independent society(not micromanaged by the gov't that we're supposed to manage), we would not be in this mess. I too have lost my career in the economic demise, but I blame that on myself for.... More

Whether anyone wants to admit it, the USA is God's country, grace, mercy and liberty was ours, we proved one time or another that we are made of the right stuff, but we know there is ignorance. Let the ignorance go, let''s be better people under God's time and grace, while we still have breath and a chance to react the right ways. Pass the Bill, be human and right.

I lost my job in May of 2009 after a hospital that I worked at for 10 years was closed by a major corporation in Philadelphia. I immediately signed up for school and unemployment and have been blessed enough to receive the unemployment thus far. I have applied to countless jobs so that I can work AND go to school. Guess what! I have gotten calls, I have gotten interviews - but I HAVEN'T gotten a job! So, thank GOD that I have still been taking classes. Maybe by the time I graduate with a.... More

How we as the greatest country in the world can allow our citizens to live in tents and cars all because they wanted the best for their families and lost that ability. Those ofo you who truly believe that the unemployed don't deserve this extension should be ashamed of yourselves. I lost my job after 30 yearsof dedicated service never knowing or believing it would happento me.
Presently, I am without any benefits never obtaining my first extension.

At Enough is Enough:
My husband has a bachelor's degree, at least 11 years experience in the same field, and when his plant closed in March 2009, he was left without a job. This is his first time on unemployment. He has applied for many jobs - at least 10 a DAY - but we cannot afford for him to work for $8.50 an hour with no benefits - so your comments are ignorant. PEOPLE WANT JOBS. It's fools like YOU who say "cut off unemployment so that people will take jobs". Can YOU afford to work.... More

I have been in UE since Nov 2009. I have looked for a job every single day, my benefits ran out 5 weeks ago and I am praying that this legislation gets passed NOW!! There are those of us that need this money to pay the bills or we (myself, husband, and 3 children) will be living in the car. How is that going to help the economy recover???

Thank you for commenting too, John! I wish you the best and hope this vote goes for the best for those who need the help! You know what they say about jerks, right? There is a 12% jerk factor ratio in the world. ha ha I feel sorry for people who have no heart or who do not want to or cannot see the other side of the picture.

Maryanne,

How long have your friends been "trying" to find work? When do you draw the line and force people to find work at some job until they can find the job they are looking for?

What a foolish comment @ Maryann, Enough is Enough! Do you really think people want to earn 1/2 their income on unemployment and not work. Most of the 700,000 people in this country who are unemployed NEED to work - they just cannot find jobs. They cannot afford to work for $8.00 an hour, part-time, after making $70k+ when employed. You are foolish to think that taking unemployment benefits away will help our economy and make people work.... are YOU hiring?

A JOB IS A JOB SO WHAT IF IT IS NOT USED TO WHAT YOU USED TO HAVE IT IS SOMETHING
so you can either take the "8.00" her hour job or starve, sorry if the lifestyle some people are used to living making 70K cannot be kept up but i promise you, you can and will survive off of it if that was all you had to do, so please don't say i need but will not accept cause you must not need it that much

Are you hiring? Good one! It is obvious that anonymous enough is enough is a chicken and cannot even leave a name to his or her post, so probably he or she is not hiring. They are probably living with mommy and daddy and not having to pay rent or for food. LOL I hope it all works out for everyone who needs work and bills paid!

It is easy for some people to say/think that if unemployment funds aren't available that that will force the unemployed to get jobs but that isn't as easy said as done. My husband has tried to get jobs at stores with no luck. You see, they believe that if he is offered a position in his line of work, he'll jump at it. But jobs in production control or purchasing are far and few between. Believe me, he's been applying to everywhere he can, even out of state.

I hear you there. Mr or Mrs Anonymous on here is obviously a minority on this vote. lol I am all FOR the vote to pass the extensions and I hope it happens fast! Why they need to wait for someone to be sworn in is ridiculous! I hope your husband finds some work, but if not, I hope the unemployment lasts long enough to help until that can happen! Meanwhile, all these people who are voting on this UE extension have their jobs and bills paid and have food on the table and are not worried about how.... More

What is your point? What are you saying, that you believe people should be able to get hired with the snap of a finger? There is not much work in the area where I live, but I am lucky that I am able to work from home. Not everyone has an education or can afford to get one. Is that your point? I have an education and lots of training and tried to find work a while back, but lucky for me, I found out that the Internet is where I can earn. Not everyone has the capabilities to do that though, so.... More

I went from $35 an hour to $13 on UE. Your comment just presumes people need to 'accept' a lower lifestyle. HELLO you moran!!! UE does NOT pay the bills, UE does NOT pay the mortgage. So, NO, there are hundreds of thousands of people who through no fault of their own have been laid off. I was fortunate enough to keep my job till the third round of lay offs.
UE, at least in Oregon, only pays up to 50% of you hourly wage.. or the $13 cap. That said... after having sent out over 100.... More

I have watched some friends of mine try to find work and have not been hired yet. Some of them have one week left of benefits and are hanging on the edge of their seats, looking for work every day, and wondering what they will do if this does not pass. Why can't our President just vote it in? Why are the republicans so down on those that do not have jobs? Do they (the republicans) think that people like to live on like 200 dollars per week? Some people have rent that is around 160 per week. My.... More
