USGBC commits to helping rebuild Haiti

The U.S. Green Building Council is committed to helping rebuild Haiti.

The U.S. Green Building Council, home of the LEED green building rating systems, has announced its commitment to help rebuild Haiti after the country was devastated by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake. Specific details are not yet available, but the USGBC is encouraging those who can help to do so through the Clinton Foundation Haiti Relief Fund.

The USGBC has experience with rebuilding communities after natural disasters. The USGBC was involved in rebuilding efforts after a massive F5 tornado destroyed the entire town of Greensburg, Kansas, as well as green rebuilding efforts in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaks wreaked havoc on the city.

The green building organization is already familiar with the unique challenges they will face when undertaking such a massive effort in the impoverished island nation. In the spring of 2009, USGBC CEO Rick Fedrizzi was part of a United Nations Special Envoy to Haiti that included former President Bill Clinton. Fedrizzi’s knowledge of the country will be valuable as the focus switches from recovering from the earthquake to rebuilding the nation.

Rebuilding plans are already underway and as more details about the USGBC’s involvement in Haiti are released, I will be sure to provide updated information.

Dear Mr. Rick Fedrizzi, ceo- USGBC,
Indeed, one year elapsed but no remarkable development is found in rebuilding haiti, We do trust quitely that your dynamic strategies, efficiency & nobility might implement the rebuilding haiti, as long as you were involed with UN now under the leadership of Bill clinton it might be strengthened importantly to launching the rebuilding haiti entirely, considering a grand impetus GLOBAL EMPLOYMENT BUREAU has resolved to share & human resource donate.... I think there needs to be an immediate response that addresses the lack of housing in Haiti. Look at cellular concrete as a solution. Done properly cellular concrete would be a simple, quick, green solution to the housing and commercial construction that must be done and done quickly! As a bonus vast amounts of rubble would be transformed into new green construction materials.
Another bonus is that in the process we could train a cadre of eco-builders.

Reports vary on the percent of.... More

I have an idea for efficient, environmentally sound and esthetically pleasing housing and reclamation for Haiti. I've thought it out and would love to find some people in San Diego who are thinking the same thing and pool our ideas and come up with something worthwhile to submit to SOMEONE. The "someone" being the problem. I hope that this tragedy doesnt become yet another excuse to build shoddy or toxic replacement homes. I hope it doesnt become yet another corruption story 2 years from now.More

With a Green Building System like I build with, 100,000 houses could be built in one year in Haiti. Safe, lite weight and strong enough to withstand another Earthquake. Is anyone listening?

I read something about a week and a half ago that there was actually talk of sending the toxic FEMA trailers to Haiti. I don't know what ever happened with that but it did cause an uproar. I am not sure who, exactly, to contact because it seems that there are many separate efforts in the works. I would check out the Clinton Foundation as the USGBC is working through that organization. Good luck!

I know the Haitian people need the jobs to rebuild their country, and stimulate jobs - I'm a laid off hvac man with diverse skills in the construction trades,
do not have resources to get there or support myself, but it's just about killing me to stand by helplessly while
all those people need housing - the rainy season is around the corner- any

Recent events in Haiti, as horrible and unfortunate as they were and are, have given the people of Haiti an opportunity unmatched in their history. They can rebuild and create a modern, high tech city and become a shining example of enrgy efficiency and sustainability. iIn particular, they can adopt a new building code and enforce it, create energy effiicency requirements that will benefit them for years to come, and train people to pursue these new technologies into the future.

Thank you for your comments and it is heartwarming to see so many people wanted to help support the USGBC's mission to help green rebuilding efforts in Haiti. I would probably suggest to contact the American Red Cross or one of the many NGOs that already have a presence in Haiti to find out about volunteer opportunities. Best wishes.

Great news! Perhaps the warmth of the climate will allow them to use lightweight, strong materials. I wonder if any of the concrete could be re-used?
