Walgreens – Chicago, IL
Walgreens recently celebrated the grand opening of its newest LEED registered drugstore. The Logan Square Walgreens has a green roof with a white coating, uses LED lighting in the coolers and freezers, and has premium parking space for hybrid vehicles.

This is the second LEED registered Walgreens store; the first is serving customers in Mira Mesa, California. Walgreens is also working on the third LEED registered project, a store in Normal, IL, which should open in 2010. The eco-friendly Walgreens locations are just part of the company’s overall corporate social responsibility goals.

Duquesne University Power Center – Pittsburgh, PA
The Duquesne University Power Center is a 130,000 square-foot building that it home to a top-notch recreation and fitness facility, a ballroom, a Barnes and Noble bookstore, and several restaurants. The Power Center recently received LEED Silver certification, making it the first building at Duquesne to achieve LEED certification.

The facility opened in January 2008 and is the bookstore and restaurants are open to the public. Although this is the first LEED certified building on the campus, Duquesne officials are dedicated to green building as an important part of the university’s future.

Binghamton University – Binghamton, NY
The Binghamton University Downtown Center (UDC) has also recently received LEED Silver certification. The building, which opened in August 2007, took measures to divert waste from the local landfill and used recycled and locally sourced materials when possible.

Unlike Duquesne University, this is not Binghamton University’s first LEED certification. The school has two residence halls, Cascade and Windham, which received LEED Certification in November 2007.  Binghamton University was also recently named to The Princeton Review's 2010 Green Rating Honor Roll.

Unfortunately, the Chicago Walgreen's loses points for putting a drive-thru in a very urban neighborhood while building another drive-thru Walgreens just a mile away. People in cars can drive a mile to a Walgreens, while people on foot and bike now have to deal with two curb cuts on intersecting streets at an already busy intersection.
