University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The state's flagship public university is aggressively setting and meeting sustainability goals including a commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050. The campus features nine LEED-certified buildings (three platinum) with eight more seeking certification. In spring of 2015, construction will start on a 20.8-acre, 5.87-megawatt solar farm. The solar farm will place the university into the top 10 solar campuses in the U.S. In its first year, the farm's photovoltaic cells will produce 7.86 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, accounting for about 2 percent of the campus’ needs. Sustainability Working Advisory Teams (SWATeams) — each consisting of two faculty, two staff and two students — measure progress on sustainability goals.
