Standing Up for the Trees

Mid-Atlantic region foresters are trained to recognize endangered forests.

Content provided by Georgia-Pacific

Last November, Georgia-Pacific expanded its forest protection and sustainability efforts with an enhanced policy to better identify and protect endangered forests in the United States; promote conservation of forest diversity; and enhance its sustainable forestry and recycling practices.

Since announcing its Statement on Forest Protection and Sustainable Practices, Mid-Atlantic region foresters have been trained to recognize endangered forests and special areas identified and mapped using its science-based methodology. These foresters are now working with their wood suppliers in the region to implement the policy.

"Because of the training, we know how to identify endangered forests, how to treat those areas and what can and cannot be harvested," said Joe Evans, procurement forester.

"This is a huge commitment for Georgia-Pacific to implement our statement," said Deborah Baker, vice president - sustainable forestry, environmental and community outreach. "It takes a lot of additional dedication from our foresters and managers to understand and be able to identify an endangered forest, and then for them to discuss our commitments with their suppliers. Yet, we have received tremendous support for this statement from our foresters and throughout the company."
