2011 taxes must be filed by April 17

The IRS announced an extension for 2011 taxes.

If you’re a last-minute tax filer then you’re in luck yet again this year because you’ll have a couple of extra days to get your taxes filed on time. Today the IRS announced that the deadline to file your 2011 taxes is April 17, 2012.

Tax day is traditionally April 15 but this year that date falls on a Sunday. Monday, April 16, 2012 is Emancipation Day, which is a holiday in Washington, D.C. and so the whole nation gets a two-day extension to file last year’s taxes.

If you’re on the other end of the tax-filing spectrum and prefer to file your forms as soon as possible, the IRS also announced that it would begin accepting e-file and Free File returns on January 17, 2012.

When do you typically file your tax return? Do you like to get everything filed as soon as all the paperwork is in, do you wait until the last possible minute to file or are you somewhere in between?
