On Saturday, President Obama’s first weekly address of April 2011 was presented to the American public. The president continued to focus on the theme of the week – energy security and gas prices – during the address.

While energy security and reducing the nation’s dependence on foreign oil may not be a pressing concern for many, when gas prices rise everyone takes notice. The nation is still trying to recover from the Great Recession and when gas prices jump like they have been over the past few months, tight budgets get even tighter. It is unfortunate that rising gas prices are needed to draw mass attention to the importance of energy security but the Obama administration is doing what it can to capitalize on this attention.
