The 2012 - 2013 Climate Counts Scorecard was released this morning and Unilever took the top spot for the second year in a row.  With a score of 91, Unilever earned a “Soaring” rating.  The Soaring tier was just added this year and companies that earned a Climate Counts Score of 85 or higher received this rating.

This year’s Climate Counts Scorecard shows that companies are starting to get serious about green business practices.  In 2010 - 2011, only four companies received a score of 80 points or higher and in 2011 - 2012, only 13 reached the 80-point threshold.  This year, 24 companies earned 80 or more points; nearly double the amount from last year.

Only one company scored 90 points or higher, Unilever.

“Never before has it been so important for business to step up its leadership to address both the causes and the impacts of climate change,” said Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever. “Ordinary people are increasingly suffering the effects of extreme weather events and the associated food and water shortages. They are expecting us to be responsible in helping them to manage these challenges. Each of us—government, business and civil society—know what we need to do. It is time to take concerted action. We welcome this acknowledgement by Climate Counts, we still have more to do and we encourage all of our stakeholders to accelerate their commitments to responsible growth since moving in concert is what is needed.”  Source: Unilever

Although Unilever was the only company to top 90 points, UPS and Nike were just two points behind them with 89 points each.  Scott Davis, UPS chairman and chief executive officer commented on this recognition, “Being recognized as the top corporation in our industry is an honor and validates UPS’s efforts to act responsibly as a business, an employer, and as a corporate citizen. We continue to advance our efforts to measure, manage, and mitigate our carbon footprint while offering our global, socially conscious customers innovative products and services.”
