Hanesbrands, parent company of Hanes, Champion, Playtex and other big names in the underwear industry, has opened its new, green distribution center in Perris, Calif.  The warehouse was built using the U.S. Green Building Council’s guidelines for eco-friendly construction and the company will be pursuing LEED certification for the property.

“The company began shipping from 700,000 square feet of the distribution center this week and will start up operations in the remaining 600,000 square feet in April. Hanesbrands will lease the distribution center and retain NFI, a third-party logistics provider based in Cherry Hill, N.J., to manage the facility.” Source: BusinessWire
Green upgrades to the project allowed for an 18 percent energy use reduction and a 40 percent reduction in water use.  In addition to the resource savings, low VOC products and organic pest control measures were also used.  Employees at the plant can take advantage of better parking spots if they have a low-emission vehicle.

If the warehouse receives LEED certification, it will not be the first green building award for the company; the Hanesbrands’ Bentonville, Arkansas location has a LEED for Commercial Interiors certification.  If the Perris facility receives LEED certification, it will be one of the largest eco-friendly warehouses in the world.
