Newsweek’s Green Rankings 2012 is out and IBM tops the list of the greenest companies in the nation for the second year in a row. The company earned a 78.9 Impact score, an 87 in Management and an 82.9 in Disclosure for an overall Green Score of 82.9. This is slightly higher than IBM’s 2011 82.5 Green Score.

"Environmental sustainability benefits our clients, our company and the planet, and we are constantly striving for continual improvement," said Wayne Balta, IBM's vice president of corporate environmental affairs and product safety. "We are grateful for this recognition as it reflects the long-term commitment of IBM and its people to environmental leadership throughout the company's global business operations." Source: IBM

Green Scores were calculated after Newsweek, Trucost and Sustainalytics examined each company’s environmental footprint, how the footprint was managed and corporate transparency. This data was used to generate three category scores, each worth 100 possible points: Environmental Impact Score, Environmental Management Score and Environmental Disclosure Score. An overview of the full scoring methodology is available on the Newsweek website.

IBM wasn’t the only company that retained its position on this year’s list; both the second and third greenest companies also kept pace with last year’s performance.
