Attention, Pinterest fanatics: You could win a $500 Walmart gift card by doing what you love most, pinning. The Walmart Green “Pin to Win” contest, the company’s first contest on the Pinterest platform, runs through Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012.

Simply create a “Walmart Green: Pin to Win” board on Pinterest and fill the board with at least 10 images from Walmart.com that inspire eco-friendly living. On Sept. 17, 2012, Walmart and the Mother Nature Network will announce the five $500 Walmart gift card winners on the Walmart Green Room Blog.

With more than 20 million Likes on the Walmart Facebook page and more than 250,000 followers on Twitter, Walmart has a strong social media presence. However, Walmart made the decision to host this eco-friendly living contest on an up-and-coming social media site instead of one of the heavy hitters.

Pinterest is a logical choice, despite the lack of an expansive existing audience, because the demographics of the average Pinterest user aligns closely with Walmart’s core customer — moms. Moms like you and me. Moms who want to help make the world a better place for their children by making eco-friendly choices.

The choice to focus on eco-themed products for Walmart’s first Pinterest contest aligns with the company’s overall commitment to sustainability.

“We believe that this is a good area of focus to start,” said Brooke Buchanan, director of sustainability communications at Walmart. “We're very proud of our sustainability initiatives, we know that it is an issue that matters a lot to moms and to our customers, and so we decided on sustainability first.”

In 2005, Walmart announced three broad environmental goals:

  • To be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy
  • To create zero waste
  • To sell products that sustain people and the environment

It is easy to see Walmart’s progress on this third goal by simply visiting your local store. Over the past several years, Walmart has expanded its selection of eco-friendly products while maintaining its commitment to everyday low prices. Buchanan explained that the increased availability of greener products allows “consumers to be as environmentally friendly as possible without spending more money.”

The expansion makes it easy for families to go green without spending a lot of green, but it also makes it easier for consumers to pick their favorite eco-friendly products and Pin to Win a $500 Walmart gift card.
