New York Times just released a sobering report about the state of drinking water in the U.S. The report found that since 2004 over 500,000 violations of water regulations have occurred, most prominently the failure to report toxic spills and illegal dumping into waterways.
 
According to the report, 19 million people in the U.S. contract illnesses from drinking water contaminated with pathogens, and at least 40 percent of the nation's community water supplies have at least one violation per year (i.e. tested water exceeds toxicity levels allowed by law).
 
The biggest non-surprise in the report is that the Environmental Protection Agency under Bush not only failed to enforce clean water regulations, in several instances they actually interfered when States attempted to regulate their own water supplies.
