More solar-powered school spirit

Take your mind off of the Pac-10 for a moment to root for these 10 collegiate entrants in October's 2009 Solar Decathlon.

On Monday, I blogged about the 2009 Solar Decathlon, the Department of Energy-sponsored solar home design and build competition for college students that will be hitting the National Mall in Washington D.C. in October. I also posted information about 10 of the 20 sustainable squads that will be duking it out in our nation’s capitol.

Below are the homes of the remaining 10 teams — more homegrown ones and a few international entrants as well — who have spent the last couple of years designing and building their green homes off-site. During the Decathlon, they'll ship the homes to D.C., rebuild them in a special solar village and partake in a series of 10 objective and subjective contests to determine which 800-square foot abode is the most livable, attractive and energy-efficient.

Again, it's an event worth checking out if you're in the area. I'll be traveling down to tour the homes during the competition's final weekend. And in case you're keeping tabs, Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany) took top honors in 2007 with the University of Maryland and Santa Clara University coming in at second and third.

doubled-up stress

hello. the most homey approach vote is to CurioHouse, SolAbode, and then Luminhouse. white trash goes to Refract House. even BeauSoliel resembles a campus structure, and the rest look like government out buildings. i like the privacy wall element, but the life offers less personal space than an efficiency apartment. there is only room for one permanent occupant.
