BadaBing in BK

Although not my personal favorite, the EcoSystems Bada Table wowed the crowds at BKLYN DESIGNS 2009.

At every furniture show or design expo (or convention in general) there are exhibitors that really know how to draw a crowd. Whether it’s freebies, booze, noise or a lot of razzle dazzle, it takes something to capture the attention of oft-distracted attendees.

On the afternoon that I attended the 2009 BKLYN DESIGNS show, the venue was swamped … and if there was one exhibitor that captivated the audience it was EcoSystems.

All the hubbub was over the Bada Table, a dining table made from reclaimed oak that transforms in seconds with the help of a credit card into a comfy-looking loveseat bench. A bit gimmicky, yes, and an obvious crowd pleaser thanks to the demos, but it’s a gorgeously crafted piece of furniture (check out the animated GIF) with no over-the-top razzle dazzle needed.
I’m not as familiar with EcoSystems as I am with some of the other designers that showed at BKLYN DESIGNS, but I’m super impressed with this young firm’s five-part green design philosophy: The use of green materials like FSC-certified wood and bamboo, regional manufacturing to cut back on fuel costs, flat-pack shipping to curb waste, tool-free assembly and a no-waste policy (once a product’s “first life” is over, EcoSystems will fetch it to reclaim and recycle the materials).

The folks at Inhabitat awarded EcoSystems with a Best in Show award, and Lloyd Alter over at TreeHugger concurs that their showing was pretty amazing. Not my numero uno pick but still pretty Bada- ***.

Toughie...

Hey Andrew. Toughie. Bada table was up there on the list, obviously, but I was pretty darn smitten with the new stuff from Uhuru (and not just because they're in Red Hook). Congrats with the great show.
