Dumpster swimming

Dive in to the ultimate summertime DIY project: swimming pools made from repurposed dumpsters.

To kick off a series of posts on everyone’s favorite backyard feature during the hot n’ sticky summer months, the swimming pool, here’s a unique aquatic design to check out (read: envy): repurposed construction dumpster swimming pools.

Derelict strip mall-transforming design collective Macro-Sea’s renegade dumpster pool parties in Brooklyn are a hush-hush affair (they’re thrown in undisclosed locations) but lucky for us, somebody took pictures.

This is probably the first time I’ve ever salivated over the sight of a dumpster. The rehabbed dumpsters not only look like a ton of fun but they’re one of the more nifty examples of adaptive reuse I’ve seen recently. And from looking at the photos, it’s obvious that the dumpsters weren’t just cleaned out and filled with water  … a dumpster pool arrangement has been created complete with three separate pools, a deck, and ladders. It’s the real deal.
Inspired? Check out this post from Make about DIY dumpster pools. And stay tuned for more swimming pool-centric posts on topics like solar heating, chlorine alternatives, and eco-friendly poolside furnishings and accessories.

Macro-Sea, if you ever make it to Red Hook (we’ve got plenty of dumpsters and free space), don’t be shy. Drop a line. Me and my swim trunks are waiting to dive in.
