As an unban planner, I found this article interesting. However, the good points are sullied by Mr. Turner's assumption of knowing Mr. Zimmerman's mindset.
" Martin appeared suspicious and threatening to George Zimmerman because he was black."
How do you know this Mr. Turner? I live in a traditionally designed urban neighborhood that unfortunately experiences a lot of crime. The police ask us to call them often when we see something suspicious and we do. I called the police once on a black man a couple of weeks ago and then the previous week on a white man. Was I threatened the first time because of race and the second time I was justified? I don't live in the burbs, and yet, when we find suspicious people in our neighborhood, we call police in an attempt to stop the ongoing crime we face daily. We aren't assuming any trespassing at all. There is a tension within our neighborhood of wanting to be welcoming and not wanting to be victims any more. There has to be room for discussing this tension without it being labled as racism, and I feel like Mr. Turner fails to bring the important role of urban design bythrowing his own judgemental assumptions into the ring.
