As a physician, I think many, many of the comments here are misinformed or biased. Fluorine actually occurs in your body as fluoride, a negative ion. Fluoride is a trace element, since there are only a couple grams total in your body, around 95 percent of which is in your teeth and bones in the form of hydroxyapatite. Fluoride's main function is to help build healthy teeth by increasing the density of the mineral crystals that form your teeth. This also occurs in your bones, but it primarily occurs in your tooth enamel. Adults need 55 micrograms fluoride every day. A deficiency in fluoride typically only causes a higher risk of tooth decay; however, this too occurs rarely, since most tap water available in this continent contains fluoride, so even a single glass of tap water contains enough fluoride to meet your daily needs. Fluoride is only toxic if you consume it in excessive amounts, but tap water lacks the concentration to make that even a possibility. Symptoms from acute fluoride toxicity include nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting.

I think it might be more related to destroying bloodlines, the legacy of an elder or something more spiritual, rather than a zombie uprising.

The quartz crystal won't break that easily, I can tell you that from experience. A small shard of it (like the one shown in the picture) falling from human height won't suffer any kind of damage on asphalt or rocks. As the data is stored in deep microscopic layers inside the crystal, the data won't be affected. I think human intended damage (hitting it with the purpose to damage it) is one of the eventual pitfalls. However, there's not a single storage device in human history that can withstand human malice.
