As someone who works entirely
Tue, Feb 26 2013 at 12:12 PM
As someone who works entirely form home (albeit for my own business), I'm torn on this issue. I have the discipline to work at home and have done so for 7+ years. Anyone who doesn't have the discipline ... their boss should know and a corrective action plan established.
As far as interraction "around the water cooler" .. please. That is just gossip and small talk. I'm not that far away from the days working in corporate America. Between phone, meetings (too many and not wholly relevant), instant messenger and "pop ins" (people who pop in to chat), the traditional office work environment really isn't the most conducive for getting things done. Should you take the initiative to turn off your phone, close your door, etc. that is invite for others to barge in to figure out what you're doing. No thank you.
With Yahoo using this mandate, they are in essence forcing a layoff without having an official layoff. They stand to reap the benefits (of a smaller workforce) without the effects that a layoff would have financially.
