Any purebred born today has

Any purebred born today has the potential to end up in a shelter.  So yes it is a good thing to visit the shelter if you want just a dog to hang around the backyard and be just a pet, but some of us spend a lot of time and effort with our dogs; we want that certain *something* in a dog and might have a "job" in mind for them so it's better to choose what you want and need.  Heck, why pick one or the other - get one of each!

I just think it's sad that people feel forced to choose a dog only BECAUSE it needs a home because some lowlife decided they didn't want to bother with it anymore.

I was thinking this article was about dog breeds with genetic problems - that end up costing their owner's thousands and thousands in veterinary bills. THOSE are the most expensive dogs.
Canada seems much more

Canada seems much more pet-friendly (motels AND parks) but it's still a challenge to find pet-friendly beaches. Can't take our Lab to the ocean - I'm sure the salt water would make her deathly ill since she tends to swallow a lot of water when she swims and she's never been in sea water. Plus the hazards of sharks and jellyfish (etc), And most pet-travel sites are not kept up to date; many parks and places change their policies on dogs... It's frustrating to teach your dog to be well-behaved enough to travel easy, and then can't take them so many places. <:o(
