The short answer is that you can't get quality appliances anymore. We've been through a lot of appliances over the past 10 years or so because, as a salesman finally admitted to me, they are designed to last no more than 5 years. Basically, companies can make more money if you have to repeatedly purchase their product, so they design it to break. I've had cheap appliances and expensive ones and they all broke within 5 years. Now, I buy the cheapest appliance that will get the job done and then get an extended warranty. The only thing that might last more than 5 years is a clothes dryer.
