I’m Lena - potter, mother of superheroes, and enthusiastic composter…oh, and now a t-shirt designer. I wasn’t always this way. About halfway through my hi-tech marketing career, I realized I needed a hands-on creative outlet. My sister-in-law had taken a pottery class at the local Parks and Rec and what she created interested me. I took my first class and fell in love with clay. Playing with clay came natural to me. I was a tomboy growing up. It was hard not to be with three brothers. As kids, we spent a lot of time playing in the red North Carolina clay making yummy mud pies. I think we even ate a few. My first pottery class felt like a homecoming. I was relaxed and my thoughts were in the moment and I was hooked. Several years later, I’m still hooked though I’ve yet to relive my childhood and munch on any leftover mud.

Making pottery reignited a passion that I had at 16-years-old for design and artistic expression. When I was a full-time marketer, I taught myself Photoshop and InDesign and took advantage of any opportunity to design sales brochures and online ads. It was my favorite part of work. A few years ago, as a joke gift for friends turning 40, I made t-shirts featuring the statement “I’m Compostable.” (After all, isn’t that what happens to our bodies when we pass on to the great beyond?) And, voila, my green-loving t-shirt series was born. The shirts are 100% certifiable organic cotton with water-based inks.
