As a parent of a child attacked by a pit bull, I am in favor of any legislation that addresses the problems posed by these dogs AND their owners. We were walking down a neighborhood street when this dog chased us down the road, knocked us down, then went for the smaller of the two of us and inflicted damage on face (at the eye among other places), ear, and leg, leaving gaping wounds that poured blood. Many stitches were required. This was an unprovoked attacked, since that always needs to be stated for these owners who post saying that all dogs bite and pit bulls must be provoked. A chihuahua could not have knocked us both down and held my child on the ground. If you want to then argue that it is an owner problem, then why not criminalize owner failures? No recourse against this owner is feasible in this particular case. In my local paper there have been many of these attacks reported, some resulting in death; the latest was yesterday. Somewhere on this forum is probably the owner of the dog that attacked my child, saying something about how sweet these dogs are.
