Now this one doesn't seem so cruel to me. If the mom takes them both, they would starve, and there's more stress on the mom.
that's how mother nature usually works
I'm used to it being the other way around; the male eats the mom's kids, like with bears. For some animals, the male would kill the mother's young, than mate with her, so only his kin survive...and not the previous father's.
