Spring comes early to Maine
Thu, Mar 11 2010 at 5:03 PM EST
Today in central Maine it is 50 degress. Many people might find that a frigid temperature, but for a state that often receives snow well into April, it is near tropical. Guys and gals can be seen walking around sporting shorts and flip flops and it seems as though everyone's mood has lifted. Around campus, frisbees are flying through the air and soon enough boys will be strolling the campus with golf clubs in hand.   Read this blog
Who's going to vote against children's health? Oklahoma Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe

Recently in my human health and the environment class at Colby College, we have been discussing the chemical industry and its inevitable effects on human health and the environment. We recently read and discussed the innovative and inspiring "An Act to Protect Children's Health and the Environment form Toxic Chemicals in Toys and Children's Products" (Maine Public Law Chapter 643). Read this blog
Barrels Community Market: A positive experience for everyone
Fri, Jan 29 2010 at 4:46 PM EST
In my last blog entry, I interviewed Jean from Kennebec Cheesery who mentioned that she sells her products at Barrels Community Market. Barrels Community Market is a nonprofit community market that offers farmers like Jean a reliable place for their products and provides the Waterville and surrounding communities with a sure place to find local and often organic products. "Barrels" offers both educational and community volunteer opportunities.   Read this blog
Goat farming in Maine

Earlier this fall I was lucky enough to visit Kennebec Cheesery, owned and operated by Jean and Peter Koons. Kennebec Cheesery has a beautiful farm with a lovely bunch of white Alpine goats. After waiting in line to buy Kennebec Cheesery's famously popular (at Colby College) goat cheese every Thursday at the Waterville Farmers Market, I was excited to visit the farm and see where the delectable goat products come from! I truly enjoyed meeting the goats of the farm and talking to Jean about her life as a goat farmer. Read this blog
It's getting better all the time

When it comes to being green, Colby College has "got it going on." In fact, a green leprechaun might seem more fitting as the college's mascot than its present one, a white mule. But no one really seems to understand that lucky charm, anyway. Despite the recent negative change in the economy, Colby has been consistently progressing toward the prototype of a green campus. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency named Colby College the Individual Conference Champion for the second year in a row. Read this blog
Fall in Maine
Sun, Oct 18 2009 at 1:22 PM EST
Every summer, thousands of tourists flock to Maine to enjoy its natural beauty and splendor. Images of sailboats and red lobsters are how many tourists remember Maine. However, after living here for two years, I have realized that Maine's truly most spectacular season is fall. The flora of Maine is diverse, and, with the changing of seasons, creates a jaw dropping palette of colors. To capture some scenic fall shots of the surrounding area, I went on an adventure to the Belgrade Lakes. The first photo was taken just down the road from Colby College on Rice Rips Road. Read this blog
