I was browsing the Web and found several interesting stories to share with you from the environmental world.   Is organic food viable with such high prices? Former congressman teaches kids "bees, trees and rocks." Read this blog

Who said local food is all vegetables?
Wed, Aug 12 2009 at 4:38 PM EST
While most people think fruits and veggies when they hear anything about buying local, there are plenty of cow, pig and chicken farmers here in the cornhusker state. Show your local farmer some love and check out a supplier near you. Here's a convenient roundup of everything local in Lincoln, Nebraska, from Buy Fresh, Buy Local newspaper.   Meat, fish, poultry & eggs   A-(Bar) Ranch Contact: Mary Lou Block (308-537-7538) Gothenburg, NE Read this blog
Products we love, products we hate: Overpackaging
Wed, Aug 05 2009 at 7:40 PM EST
Other companies should look to the makers of Pure & Natural products to get an idea of what smart packaging looks like. Not only does Pure & Natural's packaging save its own company money, but it helps the environment, too. (Most money and resource-saving measures are also good for the environment). Read this blog
Are thrift store clothes really that bad? (Plus fun poll)
Thu, Jul 16 2009 at 1:10 AM EST
If you haven't shopped at a thrift store lately, I think it's time you give it a try. There are plenty of good reasons to start. You can feel good knowing that with each purchase you are: Buying clothes that would otherwise be trashed. You're keeping clothes out of landfills! Read this blog
Excerpt of the day

From Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong:   "If the majority of books and articles and the arguments in this chapter seem skewed to favor the environmentalists, perhaps the potential downside risk if they are right makes this bias appropriate" (Loewen 264).   And that's why we're on MNN.     Read this blog
Pepe's: A restaurant review
Wed, Jul 01 2009 at 11:38 PM EST
I was planning to visit several organic/whole/local grocery stores last week in order to review them and post them here on MNN. But on the day I wanted to go, my boyfriend got a call that he had gotten the job he'd been wanting for weeks, so we had to celebrate. We went to Pepe's in the Havelock district and parked across the street. I was surprised at how out of the way the place was. If you weren't looking for Pepe's, you'd probably miss it.   Read this blog
Photos of tornado damage in Nebraska, climate change
Mon, Jun 29 2009 at 7:28 PM EST
On June 18, storms swept through our state and a tornado touched down just outside Aurora, Nebraska. It's not something I'm proud of, but here in Nebraska, tornadoes are more of a source of entertainment than something seen as dangerous, because everyone is so used to them. You can see in this video of the Aurora tornado how excited people get when faced with one.   Read this blog
Population growth, natural resources and exponential function
Sun, Jun 21 2009 at 12:38 AM EST
These videos I found on YouTube tie together a lot of environmental conservation concepts with exponential function. The professor in the videos, Dr. Albert Bartlett, discusses the nature of doubling time and how population growth and the diminishing of finite resources seems to almost sneak up on us. After watching it, I wonder, is choosing not to have children the ultimate act of conservation? I mean, we can recycle, and even tell our children to recycle, reduce and reuse, but I don't think that will be enough in the long term. Read this blog
Eco-friendly shoes in Lincoln?
Wed, Jun 03 2009 at 10:46 PM EST
Last summer or so I bought a pair of Earth Spirit shoes that I was pretty happy about. They're comfortable, cute and made of recycled rubber soles and recycled leather. But the Earth Spirit web address seems to have been bought by a company that sells erectile disfunction meds. (No, I'm not linking to it.) My guess is they went out of business. So, now I'm thinking of trying Footloose & Fancy in Lincoln, where they sell shoes by Simple, "shoes for a happy planet". Read this blog
