Interesting image. It looks like that is all ice coming out of the downspout. So you have frozen water in a plastic container HELLOOO! Plastic will only take so many freeze and thaw cycles before it fails. My bet is that it will crack open on the mold seam OR the hose fitting will burst and you will never be able to fix that. Downspout Diverters are a much better way to keep water from getting into a barrel in the winter time: http://downspoutdiverters.com/

I agree that the one of the most important problems that folks overlook when putting in a rain barrel is the volume of water and the overflow of that water so close to the home. There is water diverter that fits inside the downpipe that is really pretty cool - I saw them here http://www.aquabarrel.com/product_rain_barrel_parts_kit_earthminded.php

Coke does not usually allow folks to grab just one barrel from them. They have a recycling center that most are going to. I'd suggest going to Craigslist to find one pretty cheap - just make sure you know what was in it b4 u buy it. The best DIY rain barrel kits I've found are http://www.rainbarrelparts.com/product_rbpEM_RSP_kits_rectangular.php
