The true meaning of VINYASA
Tue, Aug 07 2012 at 10:18 AM
Good work!
I would like to add that having studied with direct disciples of T Krishnamacharya and their top students, I have come to realize that the true meaning of vinyasa and the popularly accepted meaning of vinyasa is not the same. Vinyasa is NOT "all about continuous movement" but is about linking the breath and movement. As a matter of fact, the word "vi" means unique or special and "nyasa" means a specific order. There are times in vinyasa where there are static holds but not static breath. So vinyasa really means movement with breath, but in the vinyasa practice, there are many times when we hold as well.
Also, many vinyasa classes may "move fast" but those are not my favorite classes. Vinyasa should have a steady and consistent flow that is coordinated with a luxurious breath and the breath should be trained to slow down. As a matter of fact, for a "good vinyasa class", I believe that each movement/breath should be at minimum 4-5 seconds long and for seasoned practitioners and teachers, the movements and cueing may be even longer. My movements/breath can even be a 6-10 cycle during a strong practice, and often times my classes are taught with this luxury in mind. The best yogi is not the one who can do the most or move through the practice the quickest; the best yogi is the one who can get the most prana and feel the most energized and invigorated when they leave class. Ultimately, the best yogi is the one who can attain a radiant body and peace of mind.
Vinyasa can mean variations as well, or a unique way of doing some standard sequence. In classical Indian music, vinyasa is also used and it does not mean "continuous movement", but rather, it means variation of a song or tune.. or in a word "remix".
Thank you!
