Farmer D: Yo, I’m Farmer D and I’m probably not what you typically expect when you think of a farmer.

I live in the city. I travel more than I’m home. And I’m not 75 years old, wearing overalls with a piece of straw in my mouth.

So how did a South African-born, Atlanta suburbanite turn into an organic farmer?
Well, it started when I was eating and sandwich and decided I wanted to learn how to grow that sandwich from scratch.

And that turned into a passionate career in sustainable agriculture.
For over 15 years, I have been working with non-profits, developers, private landowners to create organic farms and gardens all over the country.

Some of my favorite projects in the past have been setting up farms in prisons, working with non-profits to set-up gardens in summer camps and retreat centers to individuals who have backyard gardens and want to grow their own food at home or set-up compost bins. And working with big residential developments to bring farms into the communities to make them more sustainable.

So in this series, I want to showcase projects and people that are doing great work in sustainability that you can learn from and we can all take lessons from to adapt into our own lives.
