Now that I’ve broken the seal and unleashed the “C” word — Christmas — for the first time this season and sent you scrambling to the attic to unearth your incandescent Christmas light strings so you can trade 'em in at The Home Depot for more energy-efficient LEDs, it’s time to raid another part of the home for even more savings: the pantry.

Now though Nov. 28 one of my favorite home furnishings retailers, CB2, is hosting its fourth annual Can Do Food Drive at all 10 CB2 stores (Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco, Berkeley, Santa Monica, L.A., Miami Beach, D.C., and two in NYC). Here's how it works: wrangle up a minimum of seven non-perishable edibles and get 15 percent off on any in-store purchase. As always, your donations are handed over to local food banks working in partnership with CB2.

And this is cool: If there isn’t a CB2 in your neck of the woods, you still have the chance to give to a great cause while shopping online. Donate $10 while filling up your virtual shopping basket at and save 15 percent on any purchase. Proceeds from online donations go to the hunger-fighting nonprofit, Share Our Strength.

CB2 is an excellent place for one-stop holiday gift shopping but, to be honest, I avoid it in the months leading up to Christmas. Why? I end up spazzing out and buying a bunch of stuff for myself and then leave with absolutely nothing for anyone else. It’s that good. If you have stronger sense of self-control than I do, by all means clear out those cupboards or hit up your local grocery and then get yourself to CB2 for a nice discount. And to set you in the right direction, here are eight new and notable wares made from a variety of eco-friendly materials all up for grabs at CB2. It’s also worth nothing that most but not all big-ticket, non-gifty items at CB2 like chaises and sofas are made in the USA with sustainable hardwoods and soy-based polyfoam cushions.
