Mini size me: 7 eco-dollhouses

More Ed Begley Jr. than Malibu Barbie, eco-friendly dollhouses have endless appeal to pint-sized environmentalists. And after all, why should big kids have all the green home fun?

On the market for a green home with all the eco-friendly bells and whistles like PV panels, rainwater collection systems, and sustainable furnishings. Do you also want this green dream home to have extremely limited square-footage? Today's your lucky day.

Check out these seven remarkable eco-dollhouses — apparently this is the hot new trend in toys — that are made with eco-friendly materials, feature green attributes desirable in real homes, or both. And just like with actual green home shopping, there are considerations of price and aesthetics to take into account: they range from under $40 to over $400 while some are more Frank Lloyd Wright than Fisher Price in design. True, Malibu Barbie's Dream House they ain't, but these seven inspirational homes serve as the ultimate tool in teaching your brood the importance of going green whether your actual home has solar paneling or not. And perhaps after graduating from one of these abodes, you can introduce them to miniature shipping container homes.

Kids on Roof Mobile Home — white/red @ Oompa ($31.99)
Designed in Holland and responsibly manufactured in China entirely from recycled cardboard, the biodegradable Kids of Roof Mobile Home is the ultimate in on-the-go-dollhouses since it folds up flat and is a cinch to assemble. Don't leave home without it.

HaPe Bamboo Sunshine Dollhouse @ Modern Lola ($499.95)
The grand dame of green dollhouses, the Bamboo Sunshine Dollhouse is, you guessed, made from 95 percent bamboo and features fully operational solar panels. Accommodates a modern family of five. Ages three and up.

My Green Dollhouse @ giggle.com ($70)
Although its palette is pink, this flatpack dollhouse for junior environmentalists ages two and up also features green attributes: it's made from fully recyclable and biodegradable cardboard and is protected by a nontoxic fire retardant. Made in Israel.

You're a Natural Dollhouse @ Land of Nod ($99)
Made from renewable rubberwood and featuring furnishings made from recycled materials, this model green mini-home comes equipped with rain barrels, PV panels, a wind turbine, and recycling bins. Inhabitants sold separately.

Wonderworld Eco-friendly Wooden Dollhouse @ Toys "R" Us ($149)
Previously featured on MNN, this tricked-out green dream home for dolls features a solar panel, bicycle, plants, wind turbine, and more. It's made from sustainable rubberwood and finished with nontoxic, water-based paints. Ages 3 to 6.

Our Children's Gorilla A-Frame Dollhouse @ Black Wagon ($250)
My mother was an enthusiastic collector of Fisher Price toys, so naturally, I had the classic FP A-Frame growing up. It looked nothing like this mod take on architect Andrew Gellar's iconic postwar home design. Designed in Sweden, this A-Frame is made from wood fiberboard originating from European forest waste.

Emerson House @ Brinca Dada ($299; available for pre-order)
If little Eleanor is showing an interest in modern, sustainable architecture than the six-bedroom Emerson House should be right up her alley. It features solar-powered LED lighting and is treated with nontoxic paints and stains.
