With Sonoma County, the Puget Sound, the Mojave Desert, and the snow-covered sticks of upstate New York all successfully conquered, prolific outfitter of precision-built prefab abodes, Blu Homes, has announced its debut in a previously untapped market: Los Angeles. And because this is L.A. County that we're talking about, Blu is placing a heavy emphasis on size (bigger bedrooms and walk-in closets) and luxurious trappings that “specifically appeal to the Southern California homebuyer.” Naturally, there’s a 24-foot detached "Pod" unit involved that can serve as a yoga studio, pool house, artistic retreat, or rental property/crash pad for your aspiring actor cousin from Omaha.

Due for completion later this year on a hillside lot in the ritzy north-of-Malibu town of Agoura Hills, the 2,900-square-foot model home offers a distinctly SoCal spin on Blu’s steel-framed Breezehouse design which itself an extra-airy — floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings are standard —take on Michelle Kaufmann’s already breezy pioneering modular design that celebrates indoor/outdoor living.

Explains Blu Homes president Bill Haney is a press release:

This Breezehouse has been customized specifically for the Southern California lifestyle based on what local homebuyers told us they are looking for most in a home. When it opens for tours, this home will express the best in luxurious Southern California living: beautiful modern design with a seamless indoor-outdoor connection, grand spaces and expansive decking for year-round entertaining and generous storage and closet space for the stand-up paddleboards, bikes, and other outdoor gear essential to making the most of life in Southern California.
Despite the market-specific tweaks, all the standard eco-friendly bells and whistles — energy-efficient appliances, high levels of insulation, radiant floor heating, recycled steel framing, etc. — are still in place. And as with all solar-ready Blu designs, there’s the option to pursue net-zero energy status and/or LEED or Energy Star certification (out of the factory, the home is LEED Silver certifiable).

Once completed in Blu Homes' state-of-the-art Bay Area factory, trucked south, and “unfolded” and finished at the Agoura Hils install site (no headstones were relocated, by the way), the four-bed/four-bath home will be open for private tours and public open house events.

Blue Homes' Southern California Breezehouse was announced this past weekend at Dwell on Design conference where the rapidly expanding Massachusetts-founded company enjoyed a major presence including a standalone interactive booth on the main floor of the L.A. Convention Center as well as the Blu Homes Oasis in the Dwell Outdoor area.

Any Dwell on Design attendees have a chance to stop by the Blu Homes booths or see one of two presentations, “A Day in the Life of Prefab” and “A Passion For Prefab,” held on the Demo Stage? Any initial thoughts on this latest retooling of the Breezehouse?
