If you are considering modular or prefab home, building with recycled shipping containers is worth taking a look at.

Good resource is the Residential Shipping Container Primer website. A SHOWCASE OF SHIPPING CONTAINER HOMES AND BUILDINGDS, AND A DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) REFERENCE FOR CONVERTING RECYCLED INTERMODAL CARGO SHIPPING CONTAINERS INTO BUILDINGS AND ARCHITECTURE.

Lots of great example

This is something I can afford! And I can do my way without going in to debt like most people who spend more than they can afford. Very eco-groovy.

(I can guarantee that my government wages are well below my ability to beat the system. Especially when they take 44% of every check so I can see the doctor and still pay co-pays)

Cute, and I have lived like this for the past 10 years out of necessity before it became cute. However, I assure all of you upper middle class rich folks that if you think you can stop spending money and live in slave quarters, and beat the system; forget it; Obama will make certain your once big fat retirement accounts will be incorporated into social security and your payout will be in proportion to your new carbon footprint. We cant all live like Mayberry RFD and maintain the style of.... More

first of all this home has nothing to do with Social Security, and second the only people telling you Social Security is in trouble are the Republicans. If you look at the facts you'll see that SS is not in any way in danger, there's plenty of money in it. it's only in danger from those that want to raid it, and that's not the Democrats

I absolutely LOVE #3, its so cute and so posh, it looks like something I'm willing to live in. I'd rather live in a shipping container home than be a slave to a mortgage. I love that you can make container homes as nice as you want.

The Ecopod

Ecopods.ca, Toronto, Canada
While often used as full-time residences, shipping container homes can make distinctly modern recreational retreats. Think of them as 21st century rustic summer cabins. That’s the idea behind the Ecopod, a rugged and transportable shipping container pied-à-terre that’s built to function off the grid. With its unique “cut out” design, a solar-powered electric winch is used to open and close a double-glazed thermal paned window that, when lowered, doubles as a deck for optimum outdoor lounging time. Insulation in the Ecopod is soy-based, and the flooring is made from recycled rubber.
