Liberty's crown reopens
The interior of the iconic Statue of Liberty, which was given to the U.S. as a gift by France in the 19th century, will reopen to the public on Oct. 28 — the 126th anniversary of its dedication — after being closed for a year for renovations. The renovations include new staircases and an elevator that will allow people with disabilities to witness the view from the crown.
In this photo, the sun sets behind the Statue of Liberty on June 18, 2010 as a stand-up paddle boarder floats among the waves near the Louis J. Valentino Jr. Park and Pier in New York City's Red Hook neighborhood.
