Hooded mergansers really know how to dance

A hooded merganser drake needs to know a lot of fancy dance moves to get the attention of the ladies and keep competing males at a distance. In fact, the courtship dance is quite a spectacle to watch. One of the more interesting moves is a fast head-bob, where the drak stretches his neck up and forward in a rapid motion, sometimes to the point that his breast rises up out of the water as he stretches. This, combined with that fancy crown of feathers, creates an impressive sight. As photographer Don Quintana describes it, "Truly one of the most bizzarre displays I have ever seen in a duck!"
