Scarlet macaws

Macaws are incredibly long-lived birds, surviving to the age of 40 or 50 in the wild — so a life-long commitment is no small undertaking. That's why ornithologist Donald Brightsmith of Texas A&M University thinks scarlet macaws are more like serial monogamists, and he has seen instances of divorce happen. It seems that the birds often will stay together for years at a time, but then break it off and switch mates after several breeding seasons.
