Biologist checks in

A polar bear biologist with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service Alaska Region works on the ice with a tranquilized bear. This collection of photos is from the scientists of the USFWS Alaska Region, which has a wealth of information on polar bears. (More amazing photos from this group can be found here.) As part of the Marine Mammals Management plan, the team works to ensure that polar bear populations remain healthy by monitoring how bear populations are distributed, how many of the bears are legally harvested by Alaska Natives and managing the numerous relationships that this northern location requires.
