Panda salutations

A handler cradles a baby panda that appears to be waving to visitors on June 24 at the Panda Research Base in Chengdu, China.

The Chengdu Panda Research Base is a nonprofit facility founded in 1987 with the mission of improving conservation and breeding practices of giant pandas, an endangered species that is in constant need of human intervention to reduce threats caused by habitat destruction and low birthrates.

Animal handlers decked out in blue scrubs sit with a group of six young panda cubs sprawled out on the grass.

Aching for more panda cuteness? In nearby Ya'an City, the staff of the Bifengxia Panda Base set up a webcam to follow four rambunctious panda cubs, all of whom are under the age of 2.
