To study how sponges filter feed, researchers injected a harmless fluorescent dye into the water near the animals and filmed as the dye passed through them.

Sponges pump large quantities of water through through their bodies to extract small organisms from the seawater for food.

The marine animals demonstrated that they filtered the water around them at incredible speeds, and the results are beautiful and mesmerizing.
