December 2009: Mid-Atlantic states, U.S.

On Dec. 16, 2009, a massive Nor’easter formed over the Gulf of Mexico, leaving record rainfall in its wake as it moved north. By the time it reached the mid-Atlantic states on Dec. 19, it had intensified into a blizzard aimed for the major cities of the Eastern Seaboard. Leaving record snow levels all over the area, 19 inches were recorded to have fallen in one day at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. NASA notes that between 12 to 30 inches fell on the area. Pictured here we see the Mid-Atlantic states on Dec. 20, 2009.
