December 2011: Western U.S.

In the United States, blizzards most commonly occur in the Great Plains and the upper Midwest. Here we see wintery conditions across Colorado and Kansas as imaged by the MODIS Rapid Response Team on Dec. 6, 2011. This system brought up to 1 foot of snow in some areas, making it the first significant snowfall of the season to the western U.S. An intense chill settled over the region after this snowfall, with Denver reporting temperatures as low as minus 34 degrees in some parts.
