The current trends in the food and beverage industry have tilted toward sustainable efforts for some time, but it’s hard for customers to know who is doing what and what the motivations are. One way Dunkin’ Donuts ensures sustainable coffee reaches the customer is to source certified coffee beans for some of its beverages, like Dunkin’ Donuts espresso, which is 100 percent Fair Trade Certified™, and Dunkin’ Donuts 30 percent Rainforest Alliance Certified™ Dark Roast Coffee in the U.S.
In keeping with Dunkin’ Donuts’ commitment to Fair Trade Certified espresso, the Massachusetts-based company has added a new Macchiato to its menu with the introduction of the Pumpkin Macchiato, made with 100 percent Fair Trade Certified espresso beans. The Macchiato joins Dunkin’ Donuts’ menu of classic espresso selections that includes cappuccino, espresso, and hot and iced lattes, which are available in flavors such as caramel or mocha.
Dunkin’ Donuts was the first national brand to sell espresso beverages made exclusively with Fair Trade Certified beans in 2004.
“Since 2004, Dunkin’ Brands has purchased more than 45 million pounds of Fair Trade Certified coffee for our espresso, latte and cappuccino beverages, providing additional income to the farmers who grow and harvest it,” says Christine Riley Miller, Sr. Director of Corporate Social Responsibility.
Fair Trade Certified coffee provides farmers with fair and stable wages for their product. To-date, Dunkin' Donuts Fair Trade espresso purchases have resulted in more than $5 million in premiums to coffee farmers, which can be reinvested in sustainable farming practices and socio-economic programs.
Another great benefit of Fair Trade Certified coffee is it has enabled small, independent farmers to get their products into more hands across the world. Before the Fair Trade model, many small farmers had little access to credit and received a fraction of the fair rate for the coffee. Fair Trade guarantees a minimum price, allowing farmers to focus on quality, which Dunkin’ Donuts is all about.
The release of the new Pumpkin Macchiato comes approximately one year after the launch of Dunkin’ Donuts’ Rainforest Alliance Certified™ Dark Roast Coffee, yet another example of Dunkin’ Donuts’ commitment to sustainably sourced coffee. Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee is made from beans sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms or forests. These farms and forests are managed according to rigorous environmental, social and economic criteria designed to conserve wildlife; safeguard soils and waterways; protect workers, their families and local communities; and increase livelihoods in order to achieve true, long-term sustainability.
