Vehicles are piled up like toy cars in the aftermath of floods that caused the evacuation of 50,000 people in Japan's southern island of Kvushu. At least nine people have died and 18 remain missing.

The river runneth over

A river overflows into Kumamoto City in Kvushu. About 20 inches of rain — the heaviest rainfall on record — fell July 12, causing disastrous landslides and inundating the streets with water. Even as cleanup begins, more rain is expected for the area.
