Plasma TVs consume about twice as much power as LED. Ratings site RTINGS has a handy chart that illustrates the differences between the different types of TV screens. According to Do Something, Plasma TVs consume more than 1,400 kilowatt hours each year, which can add as much as $150 to your electricity bill.

Of the total $1 billion that American gamers pay in gaming-related utility bills, $400 million comes from consoles on standby. A National Resources Defense Council report translates that usage, and it's a staggering 10-11 billion kWh each year.

The NRDC report says the Xbox One uses 210-289 kWh every year — that's up to four times as much energy as the previous model, the Xbox 360! And almost half of the electricity used by this new console is consumed while the device is on standby (an extra 72 watts each day).

The Wii consoles consume significantly less energy than the Playstation and Xbox consoles, and the new Wii U uses even less than the original Wii. At 37 kWh a year, the Wii U is the most energy-efficient console on the market.

The difference is staggering. Playstation 4 uses the most power when it is streaming video — 89 watts for every HD video streamed at 1080p, according to the NRDC report. That's up to 45 times more energy than Apple TV, which consumes just 2 watts for the same high-def video.

Your best bet for saving energy after using your console is to turn it off with the power button or remote.

Default settings aren't always your best bet. Unplugging the console is a sure way to make sure it's not sucking any energy, as some power buttons go straight into standby mode and continue to drain electricity. Go into your settings and turn this mode off completely and set the device to turn off automatically when it's idle.

How many watts does a cellphone charger use when it's plugged into a fully charged phone?

According to the Department of Energy, cellphone chargers draw 2.24 watts when the phone is plugged in but fully charged, and about one-quarter of a watt when they're plugged into the outlet but not connected to a phone. This doesn't seem that bad when compared to other vampire devices, but considering that many of us leave our chargers plugged in all the time, it can certainly add up.

Leaving a screensaver on your computer does little to help with energy consumption and can consume as much energy as when you are actively using your computer! Both have an energy consumption range from 60-250 watts, according to Northwestern University.

While the CPU and monitor of a desktop computer can use up to 270 watts, laptops only use 50 watts. But beware: laptops will continue to drain power if you keep them plugged in when they're fully charged, so remember to unplug them once they reach a 100 percent charge.

Computer monitors can consume up to 150 watts when left on, and even when you're actively using your computer, these screens beat the CPU's consumption by 25 percent. That's all the more reason to switch to an Energy Star monitor and set your computer to sleep after a period of inactivity.
