Inside the Nuclear Energy Renaissance: Plant Vogtle
With the demand for energy in general expected to increase by 27% between now and 2030, tapping into nuclear as a source has become critical.
Southern Company is leading the nuclear renaissance with the addition of Plant Vogtle units three and four, currently under construction and planned for full operation in 2017 and 2018. When completed, the Vogtle complex will be the largest nuclear generating station in the US. Walking across it will be equivalent to walking from the Washington monument to the Lincoln Memorial.
While meeting the huge increase in energy demand, Plant Vogtle will give back to the environment by replanting more than 1,600 acres with loblolly and native longleaf pines, creating and monitoring a habitat for bluebirds, wild ducks, wild turkey and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.
