Southern Company: All about innovation
“Innovation” is the byword at Southern Company. By exploring new energy solutions and finding more reliable and more efficient ways to deliver power, Southern Company is inventing the future of energy.
From the early days of the 20th century, when an engineer devised a way for line crews to change out faulty insulators while lines were energized — drastically reducing outages — to today’s work on electric vehicle technology, the company continues to address the most pressing energy issues to help meet customers’ needs.
“Our customers are looking for solutions, and they want a partner who can make their lives, their quality of life, better,” said CEO Tom Fanning. The Southern Company Energy Innovation Center is dedicated to making life easier for customers, so they can focus on the things that are most important to them.
Many of the ideas being tested in the center come from the Southern Company system's 26,000 employees, while others are surfaced through partnerships with leading universities, research organizations and like-minded companies such as Nest and Tesla.
Southern Company is also taking action to increase the role of renewables in electricity generation as a part of the full portfolio of energy resources. Its operating subsidiaries continue to expand their use of generation facilities that rely on renewable resources to produce electricity, including those based on solar, wind and biomass.
